Overview

Phoksundo Lake Trek takes you to one of the most beautiful lakes in the world, which is Shey Phoksundo Lake, located at an altitude of 3,660 m (12,010 ft). The trek offers breath-taking vistas of stunning snow-capped mountains while passing through expansive woods, wild rivers, and magnificent landscapes.

One of the many lakes in Nepal is Phoksundo Lake, which is located in Dolpa District, the country's biggest defensive district. The Phoksundo Lake Trek offers an amazing adventure experience on one of Nepal's most stunning lakes.

During the hike, you can also take in the breathtaking splendor of Phoksundo National Park and other Dolpa state treasures. Along the way, you might also encounter mountain goats, blue sheep, or snow leopards. Another notable feature of Phoksundo National Park is the wide diversity of native flora it possesses.

Additionally, tourists can see Tibetan-style homes built in the Dolpa region in the Dopla style. In addition, Dolpa remains exclusive to Tibetan Buddhism and the pre-Buddhist, shamanistic Bon-Po religion.

The inhabitants of Phoksundo Lake are humble and kind, and possess fascinating Tibetan customs, culture, and way of life. This is evident throughout the entire journey. You will have a sense of relaxation on your Trek to Phoksundo Lake due to the stunning natural surroundings and the cultures and traditions of the Dolpo region.

The Beauty of Shey Phoksundo Lake

Situated in Nepal's isolated Dolpa area, Shey Phoksundo Lake is a stunning natural marvel known for its tranquil settings and pristine blue waters. With an altitude of 3,611 meters (11,849 feet) above sea level, this immaculate lake is the deepest in Nepal and forms a substantial portion of the Shey Phoksundo National Park.

It is said that the lake has had spiritual importance for the Buddhist and Bonpo cultures historically. According to legend, a demon whom Guru Rinpoche was pursuing changed into a body of water in order to avoid being captured, creating the lake. Ancient monasteries and chortens surround the area, revealing a complex cultural variety that combines spirituality and the natural world.

Geographically, Shey Phoksundo Lake is surrounded by thick woods and snow-capped hills. Due to the lake's distinctive habitat, which supports a wide variety of plants and animals, it has been recognized as an important wetland of global importance and is so designated as a Ramsar site.

Along with a variety of therapeutic plants, the nearby forests are home to endangered species, including musk deer, blue sheep, and snow leopards. The Dolpo-pa make up the majority of the local villages, which have evolved to live in harmony with nature despite the difficult climate.

The watery environment and the rough terrain have a profound impact on their cultural traditions, traditional buildings, and festivals, which showcase a way of life that hasn't altered much over generations.

Good to Know

Accommodations during Trek to Phoksundo Lake

The variety of lodging alternatives available while trekking to Phoksundo Lake is indicative of the harsh and secluded nature of the area.

Trekkers can locate basic teahouses and lodges along the path, offering modest facilities like blankets and beds as well as simple meals, usually dal bhat (rice and lentils).

These teahouses, which are frequently family-run, provide a window into the hospitality and culture of the area. Even though the amenities are simple, they provide hikers with a warm and comfortable place to relax and recover.

It's essential to pack a solid sleeping bag and be ready for rustic circumstances because lodgings in more isolated areas can be even more basic, with limited access to hot water and power.

Meals during Trekking to Phoksundo Lake

Traditional Nepali cuisine is the main course served throughout the trip to Phoksundo Lake. The emphasis is on providing hikers with basic, healthy dishes to fuel them through the strenuous route. Dal bhat, a mix of steamed rice and lentil soup, is the main dish.

Depending on what's available, it's frequently served with pickles, vegetable curries, and occasionally meat. Typical breakfast fare consists of Tibetan bread, porridge, eggs, and occasionally pancakes.

To accommodate hikers, teahouses can also provide fried rice, noodle soups, and momo (dumplings). Meals can be heavy yet repetitive since fresh food might be scarce.

Trekkers should consume lots of boiling or treated water and warm drinks like tea to be hydrated. Although there may not be much variation, the meals are substantial and made to supply the energy needed for the hike.

Permits Required for Phoksundo Lake Trek

Since the path passes through restricted and protected regions, hikers must get many permissions to reach Phoksundo Lake. The necessary permits consist of:

  • Lower Dolpo Restricted Area Permit: Since the journey goes through the Lower Dolpo zone, this permit is required. Usually, each person has to pay about USD 10 every week.

  • Shey Phoksundo National Park Entry Permit: As Phoksundo Lake is located inside the park, hikers need to get this permission, which typically costs NPR 3,000 (about $30) for visitors from outside the country.

  • Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS) Card: For safety and monitoring reasons, this card is necessary. Trekkers traveling alone must pay NPR 2,000 (about USD 20), while those traveling in groups must pay NPR 1,000 (around USD 10).
